What is a LOLER Inspection?
A LOLER inspection (Lift standards for Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) is a systematic and detailed examination of the equipment and safety-critical parts, carried out at specified intervals by a competent person who must then complete a written report. These examinations can be carried out either by your insurance provider, or by your lift company. If your lift company carries out your LOLER inspections, they must be completed by a different engineer to the engineer that carries out your routine services on the lift.
Why do you need LOLER Inspections?
A LOLER Inspection will help you identify any damage or wear and tear to the lift. This will help prevent future accidents, for example, the lift breaking down or possibly someone getting trapped inside. Having regular LOLER Inspections can also reduce the chance of your lift being out of service for long periods of time. In this case LOLER Inspections and routine service visits go hand in hand.
Does my lift require LOLER Inspections?
The short answer is YES. If you have a lift that carries passengers you are required by law to have LOLER Inspections completed every 6 months. Whether you have a passenger lift, platform or goods lift, if the lift carries passengers, a LOLER Inspection is required. Lifts that do not/can not carry passengers do not require LOLER Inspections but still should have routine services carried out to ensure the lift is in a safe working order.
